Brinell Testing Machine

Brinell Hardness Testing machines serves one of the oldest procedures for testing hardness and in present day, it is a common procedure that is brought into use. The test supports determination of hardness of forgings as well as castings having grain structure that is too course for Rockwell/Vickers testing.

Further, Brinell tests are conducted frequently on large parts where varying test force as well as ball size allows testing of all metals. The Brinell values are considered test force independent till ball size/test force relationship is same.

The test procedure includes :

  • Indenter pressed into sample through accurately controlled test force
  • Force maintained for specific dwell time
  • Post dwell time, indenter removed that leaves round indent in sample
  • Size of indent determined optically through measuring two diagonals of round indent through use of portable microscope as well as microscope integrated with load application device
  • Brinell hardness number is function of test force divided by curved surface area of indent
